How to Purchase Retail Catalog Overstocks

Catalog retailers liquidate millions of dollars of unsold merchandise every year. You can purchase this inventory at incredible pricing, but you must be willing to negotiate and take large quantities of merchandise.

In this audio post I will share my first experience buying from a catalog company. I have provided an outline below if you would like to purchase catalog merchandise for your business.

Step by Step Instructions for purchasing from a catalog retailer:

  • Subscribe to catalogs that retail merchandise you are interested in reselling. There are many websites that list hundreds of catalogs you can subscribe to at no charge.
  • Once you find a catalog you are interested in you will need to make the first call most likely to the customer order line.
  • On the first point of contact ask the representative for the corporate customer service phone number (home office).
  • Once you have the corporate number make a call and request the contact information for the department or individual in charge of liquidating last year’s stock or customer returns.
  • Make sure at every point of contact you introduce yourself and your company in a professional manor.
  • Once you have the right contact name and number or extension request a listing of excess inventory, which usually can be emailed in an excel spreadsheet
  • You may be able to submit your own offer or the company may have established pricing for closeouts.
  • Once your offer or purchase order is accepted you will need to make payment to the catalog company via wire transfer.
  • Once payment has been confirmed you will need to arrange your own freight from the catalog warehouse to your location
